‘“Blackleg” Work in Literature’: Women Writers, World Problems, and the Working Poor, c. 1880–1920

My project examines women’s work, writing, and activism around the turn of the twentieth century, with particular reference to the work of Clementina Black and Margaret Harkness. It considers the ways in which their careers as writers and activists interlinked and situates both aspects of their work in a context of international exchange of ideas and strategies for social change.
