Pauline Eaton (French)

The representation of motherhood in the novels of Marie NDiaye.

Pauline's thesis looks at motherhood as represented in NDiaye's novels from the perspectives of mythology, psychoanalysis, and the theorising of the mother/daughter plot. It is especially concerned to identify and critique the voice of the mother as she lives her own experience of mothering and to locate NDiaye's mothers on a continuum that runs from devotion to abuse.
