Leonie Shanks (English and Humanities)

Dorothy Richardson's Correspondence and Modernist Networks

Leonie is drawing on a range of theorists - including Bruno LaTour, Pierre Bourdieu and Homi Bhabha - to find new ways of conceptualising modernist networks of cultural practitioners, using the extensive correspondence of the writer Dorothy Richardson as a way to challenge canonical modernist narratives. The thesis focuses particularly on understanding the way in which the letter - both as a material object and 'third space' within which new forms of cultural identity could be performed - facilitated connections and relationships that proved critical to modernist cultural production.
