Writing Sessions for Researchers

All researchers, from doctoral students to staff, are welcome to attend twice-weekly writing sessions in the School of Arts. The sessions are designed to give researchers at all levels some time, space and peer support for focused work on extended writing projects. We meet on Monday afternoons and Thursday mornings for three hours, and you can attend as often as you like. You should bring anything you need to write (eg. a laptop and charger, headphones, a notebook, pens, books, quiet snacks).

We follow the structure devised by Alice Kelly, with two writing sessions of an hour and fifteen minutes and a break halfway through to refuel and chat.

15 minutes: arrival, introductions and setting up

1 hour and 15 minutes: first writing session

15 minutes: break

1 hour and 15 minutes: second writing session

You don’t have to attend each session: if you think you would like to come at any point, email Clare Vernon ( to be added to the general mailing list.

On Friday, a sign-up sheet will be emailed out with details of the room.

There is a cap of 15 people per session due to the room size, so please sign up in advance.

Note: The group isn’t designed as a space for sharing work, though it might well create opportunities for doing so.

Email with any queries.
