Birkbeck MFA graduate awarded James Menzies-Kitchen (JMK) Young Director Award

Sam Pritchard, a graduate of the MFA in Theatre Directing at Birkbeck, has been awarded this year’s JMK Young Director Award. Pritchard studied at Birkbeck 2008-10 and then went on to hold the post of new writing associate at the Royal Exchange Theatre, Manchester.

The award’s £18000 bursary will go towards a production of Fireface by Marius von Mayenburg, to be staged by Pritchard at the Young Vic’s Clare Theatre this autumn.

Pritchard revealed, in an interview with The Stage, that he felt the play’s theme of division between generations had particular relevance for today’s society: ‘The fact that it asks this really bold question about what happens if one generation rejects the world they’ve inherited, seemed to me to be a question that a lot of people who are around my age are asking at the moment.’
