Lucianna Magalhaes

CertHE History of Architecture

Lucianna was very pleased when she found that Birkbeck taught her course.

'I’m Brazilian and, although I already had a degree in architecture, studying in a different language was challenging. But I was very determined. I’d always wanted to study history of architecture, but we don’t have this course in Brazil. As well as offering the subject I wanted, I was attracted to Birkbeck because I was working, so it was perfect that I could study part-time.

'Because the course is modular you can choose how you study it. That flexibility was really useful for me as I could choose my modules and spread them out over the time I needed. I didn’t have to do them all at the same time which was just great.

'The first time I had to write an essay was very difficult for me, but the tutors were very supportive, and they gave me plenty of help. I could contact them any time I needed to. I found the whole organisation of the course was extremely efficient. The tutors were all very well qualified and they really knew their subject. That really inspired me and meant I learnt a lot.

'All the facilities are in one place and are easily accessible. I enrolled in the My Birkbeck centre and used the library a lot – it’s a great library. I could do photocopying, and borrow more than five books which was brilliant. They made everything easy for students to use, and the staff were all really friendly. The coffee bar and the fifth floor restaurant were open at convenient times so you can get a hot drink or bite before going to class.

'I would definitely recommend studying at Birkbeck. I really enjoyed my time here. I feel very proud that I’ve achieved what I set out to do. I had a dream and Birkbeck allowed me to fulfil it.'
