Areas of Research Supervision

  • British art and architecture in the twentieth century
  • Architecture in colonial and post-colonial contexts (including issues of race and architecture)
  • Photography and architecture
  • Victorian architecture and urbanism
  • Internationalism and architecture
  • Interrelations between art history and architectural history

I currently supervise three PhD students who are working in the following areas: the Smithsons in the early 1950s; Postwar British visual culture and the rented dwelling; discourses on conservation in the City since the 1980s.

I have great experience of supervising PhD students from my two decades of teaching at Manchester University, where I saw fifteen students through to completion.
