Areas of research supervision

I welcome proposals on all aspects of art and architecture of the Italian Renaissance and Baroque, especially on Roman topics, Counter Reformation art, the Classical tradition in the Renaissance, theĀ paragone and Renaissance iconography.

Past PhD projects I have supervised, or co-supervised, include 'El Greco in Rome' and 'The Emergence and Decline of the Madonna del Parto in Late Medieval and Renaissance Tuscany'.

I am currently supervising a PhD on Baroque ceiling painting, and co-supervising one on Pre-Albertian Pictorial Space.

In October 2016 I will take on two further doctoral students: one who is working on the Sicilian Baroque artist, Mario Minniti; the other, in co-supervision with Professor John Henderson in the Dept of History, who is working on the depiction of plants and flowers in Florentine Renaissance painting.
