The Department of History of Art at Birkbeck presents a series of seminars on medieval and renaissance art, supported by the Bequest established in memory of Professor Peter Murray, the Department’s founder.

The Department of History of Art at Birkbeck presents a series of seminars on medieval and renaissance art, supported by the Bequest established in memory of Professor Peter Murray, the Department’s founder. All seminars are held at 5pm at Birkbeck’s School of Arts (Room 112, 43, Gordon Sq., London, WC1H OPD), and are followed by a reception.

The splendid tomb of Doge Giovanni Dolfin in the Basilica dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo in Venice once consisted of a hanging canopy and tomb by Andrea da San Felice and decorations by the famous painter Guariento.  Dr. Murat proposes a new hypothesis and a visual reconstruction of this important monument in one of Venice’s most significant locations.

Dr. Nickson examines the role, status and significance of light c. 1260, and how this has been distorted by restoration, long-held scholarly paradigms, and photographic convention. Focussing on Leon cathedral in northern Spain, his enquiries embrace texts, objects and buildings from across medieval Europe.

Paula Nuttall, Low Life in High Society: a group of drawings by Verrocchio
Monday, 7th March

Dr. Nuttall looks at Verrocchio’s startling drawings of dancers performing a renaissance dance known as the moresca.  Considering the drawings’ relationship to northern imagery and to contemporary Florentine vernacular culture, she brings new insights to these and other depictions of 'low life' subjects.
