Making Higher Education accessible to all

At Birkbeck we believe that higher education should be readily available to everyone. However, for nearly a third of our students, lack of finance remains a major barrier to attending university. They would not be able to study with us without help in the form of bursaries or scholarships funded by the generous contributions of alumni and friends. Last year over 500 eligible students applied for financial assistance, however there was only enough funding to support just over half of these.

  • Postgraduate students - As employers increasingly looking for postgraduate qualifications when recruiting. Many graduates now look to add to their first degree. As there is little government funding available to postgraduate students, it can be extremely difficult to take on the costs of postgraduate study.
  • Undergraduate students - Students can be caught in an ‘education poverty trap’ as their household income often bars them from accessing government funding. These students are committed to improving their lives and want to engage in education to achieve this. But they find that their income doesn't stretch to covering the costs of study alongside living costs such as housing and children.

Philanthropic support for scholarships will help many more Birkbeck students fulfil their potential. Birkbeck needs your help to increase its capacity to offer financial support.
