Building Birkbeck
Since 1823 Birkbeck has experienced many changes to its physical estate in the pursuit of delivering an improved student experience.
Our main campus in central London has seen many developments over the last 25 years, including investment in teaching and research facilities of international importance:
- The Babylab is internationally recognised as one of the leading research centres in the study of brain and cognitive development in infants. In 2007 the Babylab moved into a purpose-built facility in Torrington Square.
- The latest addition to Birkbeck’s centres of research excellence, The Pears Institute for the Study of Anti-Semitism, located in newly acquired premises overlooking Russell Square. The Institute incorporates the Wiener Library, one of the world’s leading and most extensive archives on the Holocaust and Nazi era.
- The Centre for Film and Visual Media provides students with a range of facilities including a state-of-the-art cinema. The Centre also hosts the London Screen Study Collection, an archive of London’s moving image heritage.
Building a campus in east London is one of our strategic priorities.
In keeping with our mission to champion widening participation and make education available to all, Birkbeck has taken its unique model of evening higher education to east London. Our aim is to establish a permanent presence in east London by creating a purpose-built campus in Stratford. This will be home to the growing numbers of students choosing to take Birkbeck courses in Stratford. The vision is for a state-of-the-art building that will deliver Birkbeck’s world-class educational programmes to people living and working in east London.
The creation of a campus in east London would allow student numbers to increase from 1200 to well over 3000 students providing more opportunities to the communities which need it most.
Expansion of the Bloomsbury campus
The college is continually aware of potential opportunities to expand the Bloomsbury campus through the acquisition of new buildings in and around Russell Square and the re-development of the current Malet street site. As and when land or real estate become available the College seeks to evaluate the impact further classroom and teaching space will have on the ability to expand student numbers.
As the College grows and expands, Birkbeck needs the support of donations from alumni and friends to maintain and upgrade existing teaching rooms and laboratories.
