'I had been working as a hairdresser but due to back problems I was looking for a new career.

'I was really nervous when I started and really didn't know what to expect, but everyone was so nice and welcoming. The preparatory course helped me gain access to university and also all the skills needed to go with it, such as essay writing and preparing for exams. It's made me more confident and has given me the belief that I have a future in higher education.

'I've gone on to study a BA in Politics, Philosophy and History and hope eventually to become a teacher. Coming to Birkbeck has been the first step on the ladder to changing my career.'
