David Field (65)

BA History

After public school, followed by a brief stint in the Navy and 34 years working as a solicitor, David Field believed that he had led what, in his own words, he describes as a 'blinkered life'. But after retiring in 2002, David decided it was time the blinkers came off.

'Through my degree at Birkbeck, I met people I would not otherwise have met, people who have broadened my knowledge of the world. At my time of life, some people are ready just to sit in the armchair; I decided it was the time to stimulate my brain with a new challenge.'

David left school with just one A-level. 'I had always felt that my education was incomplete. Birkbeck gave me the chance to achieve what I had long wanted. One of the big differences between school and college is that in Birkbeck you are not in competition with other students; in fact we actively helped each other. We were all there because we wanted to learn and that meant the tutors really wanted to teach. I couldn't recommend Birkbeck highly enough.'
