MA Historical Research

'Birkbeck's research status was a factor in my choosing the MA Historical Research at the college, and I was impressed with the Department of History. It has a good reputation, provides part-time study and specialises in dealing with mature students.

'Birkbeck has given me a great sense of achievement. It gave my self-confidence a considerable boost and has helped me to think more clearly and analyse problems better.

'My favourite tutor was Dr Chandak Sengoopta, who led discussions in the tutorials very well. I also enjoyed the term when we met different historians and they discussed their work, as well as the computer course and the Freud course.

'My dissertation was a study of the tensions between the political leadership, the military leadership and the public in a democracy in time of war, focusing on World War I.

'If I hadn't found out about Birkbeck, my life would not nearly be so full. Since finishing my dissertation, I have done more reading on the topic and have also dipped a toe into these issues as they occurred during World War II. When I retire I may do further research.

'I'd tell others thinking of applying to Birkbeck to go for it – I recommend it. It is hard work and a big commitment but is worth it. It changes the way you look at life.'
