Anne Fanning (48)
MSc Occupational Psychology
Anne Fanning, a self-employed occupational psychologist, was attracted by Birkbeck's reputation and by the fact that she could do her degree by network learning.
'I chose Birkbeck for my MSc Occupational Psychology, because the college's reputation in my field is first-class.
'I was already a member of the British Psychological Society and subscribed to the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, which featured research findings from staff at Birkbeck, so I knew about some of the interests they had. Also, whenever I spoke about doing an MSc, I was invariably asked, "And of course you'll be doing it at Birkbeck?"
Anne says her master's degree has helped her career, and she is able to use her MSc practically in her work. 'My colleagues have greater respect for me knowing I have my MSc. I am called upon for advice, and I can also command higher fees. Recently one of my more challenging clients asked for my opinion about the latest research on leadership. This was a whole module at Birkbeck, and I was able to have an informed discussion, feeling very confident, and he was visibly impressed. Having the MSc from Birkbeck on my CV has secured assignments too.
It was important to Anne that Birkbeck offered both a research-intensive environment and the flexibility to enable her to keep in step with her demanding career. Anne studied via Birkbeck's network learning route, for which students contribute to computer-mediated, tutor-supported discussion groups and attend termly residential weekend workshops.
'I could not have studied full-time. Network learning was perfect for me as it meant I could log on wherever I was at whatever time and still be learning. This route was superb, and I enjoyed the range of topics covered. The teaching staff were flexible and sympathetic, as well as respected academics, and they are experienced in dealing with mature students. Plus, I met some great people whom I've continued to see.
'The next step for me is to gain Chartership of the BPS, which having the MSc allows me to do. To gain a merit was fantastic and I now believe in myself more. I have learned to challenge and critique from an informed viewpoint, which has helped boost my confidence and reputation. I would most certainly recommend Birkbeck to others.'
