Management alumnus wins PhD thesis prize

Dr Andrew Grainger, an alumnus of the Department of Management, has been awarded a first prize by Palgrave Macmillan for the thesis 'Trade Facilitation and Supply Chain Management: A Case Study at the Interface between Business and Government'.

The PhD competition was organized by Maritime Economics and Logistics journal and Palgrave Macmillan academic publishers with the aim of promoting research excellence in the field of maritime economics and logistics. The competition ran over three years, from 2005 to 2008, during which time PhD researchers were invited to defend their submissions. Dr Granger successfully defended his thesis in 2007 and was awarded the first prize at the Award ceremony held at Erasmus University in Rotterdam.

Dr Grainger found Birkbeck to be the ideal place to study, here he could fit his academic endeavours around his professional life:

"As far as my thesis is concerned, Birkbeck enabled me to integrate my day to day work in trade facilitation with the pursuit of an academic degree. The type of thesis I produced would probably not have been possible without blending professional and academic life. Birkbeck certainly provided an ideal infrastructure in this endeavour.’ Dr Granger expressed his thanks to his dissertation supervisor Dr. Fred Guy, lecturer at the Department of Management, who was always generous with his support and advice."

Dr Granger is currently pursuing his academic interests more rigorously as a Lecturer in Logistics and Supply Chain Management at the Nottingham University Business School.

Congratulations to Dr Andrew Grainger on winning this prestigious prize.
