Alumni volunteers help at Birkbeck orientation event
Birkbeck held a first college-wide Student Orientation event in September 2009 for students starting their course in 2009/10 academic year. Almost 2000 students came along to the three-day event which gave new students a chance to find out about college support services.
A series of talks and tours provided an introduction to life at Birkbeck and there were information stands from the Students' Union and Birkbeck's clubs and societies.
Over the three days a group of 25 alumni volunteers offered advice to students who had just enrolled on their course, ran campus tours, gave talks about their experience of studying at Birkbeck and revealed top tips on managing the coursework.
The feedback from students has been overwhelmingly positive: ‘I was very impressed with the former students’ talk, which I enjoyed immensely. It was interesting to listen to another student's experiences and actually very reassuring to hear that it can be done. I came away from the talk feeling even more enthusiastic about taking my course, and far less worried! Hard work yes, but do-able!’
A growing number of alumni continue to demonstrate their personal commitment to Birkbeck by volunteering at events and speaking to students. Their presence and enthusiasm is greatly appreciated by all the staff and students.
Thank you to all alumni who helped at the Student Orientation and made it a success.
