Derek Hicks

Derek Hicks is a former regional consultant for the Higher Education Funding Council for England.

In 1977 he graduated from Sheffield University with a social science degree and went on to work in a variety of roles including retail management, IT and teaching economics, including sessions at Birkbeck. In 1985 he returned to Sheffield University to set up its European Liaison office (one of the first in the HE sector) and then led its International Office, before moving across the city to what was then Sheffield City Polytechnic. Initially, he ran the Enterprise in HE programme and then established and led the Business Development Office. Derek went on to be HEFCE regional consultant with responsibility for relations with HEIs, most notably in London. He worked with Birkbeck on several major funding initiatives giving him a deep understanding of the special role of the college. He left the HEFCE in February after 20 years.
